CAD Toy Submarine

Project Overview: A toy submarine was modeled as part of Columbia University's MECE 3408 Computer Graphics & Design course, which is designed to familiarize students with CAD software and develop their understanding of technical drawings as a means of communicating technical ideas in mechanical engineering design and products. The Fall 2023 midterm project focused on reverse-engineering a toy, accurately modeling its components in SOLIDWORKS, and assembling them to digitally recreate the device.

My Role: Mechanical Engineer

Design

  • Solidworks
    • Sketching
    • Multiple Parts
    • Functional Assembly and Dynamic Mates

Documentation

  • Solidworks
    • Dimensioned Drawings
    • Exploded Assembly Views

Deliverables

  • Final SolidWorks Assembly
  • Final Project Report

Key Outcomes:

  1. Exposure to and expertise in SOLIDWORKS

  2. Functional recreation of the toy submarine with accurate dynamic parts in SolidWorks Assembly

  3. Proficiency in technical/engineering drawings (i.e., exploded views, dimensioning, etc.)
