CAD Toy Submarine
Project Overview: A toy submarine was modeled as part of Columbia University's MECE 3408 Computer Graphics & Design course, which is designed to familiarize students with CAD software and develop their understanding of technical drawings as a means of communicating technical ideas in mechanical engineering design and products. The Fall 2023 midterm project focused on reverse-engineering a toy, accurately modeling its components in SOLIDWORKS, and assembling them to digitally recreate the device.
My Role: Mechanical Engineer
Design
- Solidworks
- Sketching
- Multiple Parts
- Functional Assembly and Dynamic Mates
Documentation
- Solidworks
- Dimensioned Drawings
- Exploded Assembly Views
Deliverables
- Final SolidWorks Assembly
- Final Project Report
Key Outcomes:
Exposure to and expertise in SOLIDWORKS
Functional recreation of the toy submarine with accurate dynamic parts in SolidWorks Assembly
Proficiency in technical/engineering drawings (i.e., exploded views, dimensioning, etc.)

A reverse-engineered toy submarine modeled in SOLIDWORKS made up of four total subparts: the submarine base, the submarine cover the escape hatch, and the propeller.
